Introducing the EMA Guide: a tool to address the non-consensual sharing of intimate images in schools

In a context of growing concern about digital violence against children and adolescents, we launched the EMA Guide, a groundbreaking resource to support educational institutions in addressing situations involving the non-consensual collection and dissemination of intimate images, in collaboration with various organizations. We developed it together with the family of Ema Bondaruk, Ley Olimpia Argentina, Gentic, Faro Digital, Defensoras Digitales de México, Fundación Encuentro por la Participación Ciudadana y la Ampliación de Derechos, and the offices of National Deputy Mónica Macha and Provincial Senator Laura Clark.

“This guide is named after Ema, my daughter. A nearly 16-year-old teenager, full of dreams, aspirations, and plans, a lover of music, animals, the beach, and sweets. A teenager who one day became a victim of gender-based digital violence, something still unknown to many, and when faced with the unknown, we often don't know how to react.

”We started with Ema's painful case to create a preventative tool that provides schools with the resources that were denied to her and her family. We are not seeking to standardize responses, but rather to offer sensitive, contextualized, and rights-based guidance for addressing situations that generate significant shock and confusion within school communities.

The digital environment is as real as any other, and the violence that occurs there must be recognized, named, and addressed by the educational community, using legal frameworks, prevention strategies, support networks, and an ethical perspective on relationships and privacy. With a focus on gender, diversity, and intersectionality, we invite everyone to rethink the role of schools in fostering a critical, respectful, and committed digital citizenry that upholds the right to a life free from violence.
